It's simple. A design must be easy to understand, user friendly, easily found by search engines, and of course, a website must be "pretty". Now while everyone's idea of what the pretty factor really is, there are certain guidelines I always try to follow.

I try to keep my designs easy to understand. That is when you reach a page, it should be quite obvious what the intended message is. Design and layout in a web page is much like a painting. And just like the masters of canvas, the artist is intending to lead the viewers eye along a path. The rules of design remain consistent from canvas to computer screen.

You may have seen the TV commercial for Kohler faucets; you know the one where the ridiculously rich person places a faucet on an eccentric architects table and says "design around this". This is a great rule of thumb for how I like to design. The content is king. Keeping things simple helps the viewer to better understand your content, thus clearing the way for your message. The message like the faucet, so to speak, is what you design around.

The viewer should also be able to navigate the site easily finding the service, product, or other intended message. User friendly designs are a must in the layout paying particular attention to the call to action.

Now while the viewer needs to find what they are looking for on your site, it is also important that the search engines are simply able to find your site. Keeping this in mind is another common practice I follow while designing web sites; utilizing URL friendly links and other tricks to help assure that the Google bots find your website.
